Your Egyptian series habit has taught you that when the hero says 3aayiz, he wants something, and when his mother says eih?, she's asking what. Then you open Duolingo to learn the language properly. "I want" is ureedu. "What" is maadha. Two hundred hours of Egyptian television and you've never heard either word.
No, Duolingo doesn't have Egyptian Arabic. Its only Arabic course is Modern Standard Arabic. There's no Egyptian course on the app, and no Levantine, Gulf, Lebanese or Palestinian course either. Here's what that means if Egypt is the reason you're learning, and what to use instead.
The one Arabic course Duolingo has
Modern Standard Arabic is the written language of the Arab world: newspapers, textbooks, the nine o'clock news, the speeches. Children learn it at school. Nobody grows up speaking it, in Cairo or anywhere else. Duolingo's course covers it in four sections of roughly 46 units, opens with the alphabet, and never asks you to speak. Coffee shows the gap. Duolingo teaches . A Cairene orders 'ahwa, with the q gone to a glottal stop. A Palestinian orders . On this one the app is the odd one out. Same with wanting it: Duolingo's against Egyptian 3aayiz and Palestinian .
Why Egyptian is the Arabic you've already heard
Cairo has been the film and music capital of the Arab world for the better part of a century. Umm Kulthum and Abdel Halim Hafez on the radio, Adel Imam in the cinema, Amr Diab in every taxi, and a fresh slate of Ramadan series each year that gets watched from Casablanca to Baghdad. Egypt is also the most populous Arab country by a wide margin. Put those together and , the Arabic of , became the dialect every Arab can follow, the way most of Europe can follow American English from the films.
You can hear Egyptian in about two words. The letter j comes out as a hard g, so jameel, beautiful, becomes gameel. And "what" is eih. If someone says eih da?, you're in Egypt.
Egyptian and Levantine are different branches
Egyptian and Levantine (Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, Jordanian) grew up on different sides of the Sinai, and it shows in the words people use fifty times a day.

Plenty carries across too: the ma...sh wrapped around a verb to say no, and for not. So an Egyptian and a Palestinian at the same table manage fine. Most of that ease flows in one direction, though. The Palestinian grew up on Egyptian films and songs, so Egyptian goes in without effort. The Egyptian has had far less Levantine coming the other way and has to lean in for a while. If Egypt is the reason
Tfaddalu, our app, doesn't teach Egyptian. We teach Palestinian, and an Egyptian learner who started with us would pick up shoo where they need eih and biddi where they need 3aayiz. Those are habits you'd then have to undo. So, for Egyptian:
- A course built for Egyptian Arabic specifically, with audio recorded by Egyptians. Check that it says Egyptian on the tin, since "Arabic" on its own nearly always means Modern Standard.
- A tutor from Egypt, even one lesson a week, to catch your pronunciation early.
- Keep the series on. You've been doing listening practice for years without calling it that.
