Day 40 of your streak. You can sound out the sign above a falafel shop, you've tapped "the boy drinks milk" into place more times than you'd admit, and the owl is pleased with you. Then a Palestinian friend sends a voice note. Eleven seconds long. You catch one word, and it's her name.
That's Duolingo Arabic in one paragraph. Here's the short answer, checked against the course as of September 2026. Duolingo is good for the alphabet, and good at getting you to open the app every day for free. It's weak for speaking, since the Arabic course has no exercise that listens to you. And it teaches Modern Standard Arabic, the register of the news and the classroom, which no Arab family uses at the dinner table.
Is Duolingo Arabic good for beginners?
For one specific kind of beginner, yes. If you've never seen the script and the squiggles scare you, the early units do the patient work: letter shapes, how each letter changes at the start and end of a word, which sound goes with which. That's the hardest first step in Arabic, and plenty of people finish the alphabet units, stop there, and feel fine about it.
The catch shows up as soon as you want words to come out of your mouth. A beginner who learns "I want" as will get puzzled looks from Nazareth to Amman, where everyone says . "Coffee" arrives as with a hard q. In Jerusalem and Ramallah it's , the q swallowed into a glottal stop. Neither version is wrong. One of them is how people talk.
Can you learn Arabic on Duolingo?
You can learn an Arabic. You'll read shop signs, decode headlines slowly, and recognize a few hundred words on the page. That's real, and if formal Arabic is your goal it's a decent free start.
Talking to people is a different skill, and the course isn't built for it. Two reasons. The Arabic course never once asks you to speak, so you can complete all four sections without forming a single Arabic sound. And the register is wrong for conversation. Ask "what?" the Duolingo way and you'll say . A Palestinian says . "Now" is in the course and on the street. "Very" is in the app and everywhere else. Learn twenty of the most common words from Duolingo and you'll own the formal version of most of them.

What Duolingo Arabic is good at
Three things, and none of them are small.
The alphabet. Already covered, and people underrate it. Reading Arabic letters after a few weeks on the bus is a real win.
The habit. Duolingo's streak is the most effective piece of language-learning design of the last fifteen years. Getting an adult to touch a language every day for a year is the whole problem, and the owl solved it. If you're using another app for a dialect, a five-minute Duolingo habit on the side costs you nothing.
The price. There's a paid tier, the free one has ads and hearts, and you can still finish the whole Arabic course without paying a cent.
Where it leaves you
Picture the end of section 4. You've finished the tree. You can read, slowly. Your vocabulary is a few hundred words in the formal register. Then you try to say "I don't want" and realize you've never met , because the ma...sh wrap that negates every verb in Palestinian isn't in the course. You'd say "he's not here" with , when the word on every Palestinian street is . Someone asks how you are, and the answer that would come out of a local's mouth, , isn't a word the course ever hands you.
There's a gap the course can't see from the inside, too. Every ordinary present-tense verb in the Levant wears a b- on the front. Four sections of Duolingo and you'll never hear it once. A learner who's never met that b- has never met spoken Arabic, whatever the app icon says. The Palestinian vs MSA guide lays the whole split out.
Then there's the company. In 2025 Duolingo announced an "AI-first" direction and cut contract translators, which set off a backlash. That's a reason some people leave. It didn't change what the Arabic course teaches.
Who should use it anyway
- You want the alphabet and you want it free. Do the early units and skip the guilt about stopping.
- You're heading toward formal Arabic: a degree, Qur'anic study, reading the news. MSA is exactly right for you, and Duolingo is a gentle on-ramp.
- You're learning a dialect elsewhere and want a low-effort daily nudge. The two don't fight. Most educated Arabs carry both.
Who it's wrong for: anyone whose actual goal is a conversation. If you're marrying into a Palestinian family or moving to the West Bank, the course spends your months on the wrong register. Is Duolingo good for learning Arabic? For the alphabet and a free daily habit, yes. For speaking, no. The course has no speaking exercises and teaches Modern Standard Arabic, which nobody uses in conversation. Do the alphabet units, then move to a dialect course.
Is Duolingo Arabic good for beginners? It's good for a complete beginner who wants to read the script. The early units teach the letters patiently and for free. A beginner who wants to talk to people will spend months on the formal register and still be unable to order coffee the way a local does.
Can you learn Arabic on Duolingo? You can learn to read Modern Standard Arabic at roughly an A1 level. You can't learn to speak any dialect on it, because none are offered and the course never asks you to say anything out loud.
